At the Sioux Center Public Library we have over 1,000 babies, kids & teens participating in our Summer Reading Program! We are very excited to see so many kids in each week and that they are loving reading. Below are some book recommendations from our staff if your child is looking for a great read:

A Tale of Two Beasts by Fiona Roberton is a great children’s read about a girl who finds a strange beast in the woods. It is a funny reminder that there are two sides to every story. Even adults will love this tale!

The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate is about a gorilla named Ivan who lives in a cage in the mall. This heart-warming story is told through the eyes of the gorilla and will sure to bring tears to your eyes. It will be a new favorite for young animal lovers. This book is a part of our junior collection.

Rain Reign by Ann M. Martin is another junior novel about a girl who struggles with the challenges of OCD and Asperger’s syndrome. Rose loves homonym’s and her dog, but when her dog goes missing during a superstorm she must leave her routines and safe places in order to search for her pet. This would also be a great family read and time to discuss how we all have different challenges and fears.

Graphic novels are popular at the library and we would recommend reading Zita the Spacegirl. It follows a girl who accidentally gets transported to far off galaxies and her quest to return home. One librarian really liked the art style in this graphic novel because it is bright and colorful and the variety of aliens and robots are super fun to look at.

Cardturner by Louis Saschar, the author of Holes, was a fun read for our Young at Heart book club recently. It is written from a guy’s perspective about his family and the game of Bridge. It is a fun, clean read for teens.
