National Library Week

April 2016

National Library Week is coming April 10-16 and the Sioux Center Public Library has many exciting events & games planned for the week. The year’s theme is Libraries Transform which is to remind patrons that today’s libraries are not just about what we have for people, but about what we do for and with people.

Tuesday, April 12 is it National Library Worker’s Day and we’ll be hosting an Author Panel and Dessert from 7:00pm-9:00pm. Local authors who will be sharing about their work include Phil and Sandy Hamman who just published Gitchie Girl a story about the mass murder that happened in Gitchie Manitou State Park; young adult author of Hear the Crickets, BJ Sheldon;  Renae Vander Schaaf, the author of two adult fiction novels A Place of Refuge and A Place of New Beginnings; and Gail Kittleson who has written the historical novel, In This Together and a non-fiction memoir, Catching Up With Daylight. This event will be a great way to hear about the author’s writing process and inspiration for their stories.

Gail Kittleson will also be leading a Memoir Writing Workshop from 10:00-11:30am on Wednesday, April 13. We will explore what memoir writing is and what this type of writing requires. We encourage patrons to register for this event online or by calling the library at 722-2138.

Thursday, April 14 will be a fun day for younger children at the library. Ruby, the Red Panda, will be here for a story hour with preschoolers from 2:30-3:00. Space for this event is limited to 30 children so call the library today to register. Ruby will also be doing a show-and-tell for TK-4th graders at 3:30. Registration is encouraged for this program, but not required.

The 6th Annual Edible Book Contest will be held on Friday, April 15th at the Sioux Center Public Library. Entries must be edible and related to books. You may drop them off between 10:00am and 12:00pm. The general public is encouraged to vote from 3:00-4:00 for their favorite entry and then invited to taste these entries at 4:15. At this time the judges will also announce the winners for Best Tasting, Judges’ Choice & People’s Choice.

Saturday, April 16th will be fun for the whole family. We will have an After-Hours Family Game night from 6:30pm-8:30pm. Join us for oversized games & board games. Root beer floats will be served at 7:30pm.

All week long at the library we will be waiving 50% off existing fines and replacing library cards for free! We also have fun scavenger hunts, library trivia, and a Book Spine Poetry Contest. All information can be found on our website at We look forward to seeing you at the library during this fun week!
